Can Windows XP PRO be booted from an external, USB attached, portable hard
drive if the BIOS has the option to boot from USB?
At CMS's web site (
http://www.cmsproducts.com/product_bounceback_software.htm ) it says that
Windows cannot be booted from an external hard drive but a MAC can. It
doesn't mention anything about having a USB BIOS option. Is this true.

True, Windows can't be booted from a USB drive, however you can create a live
CD and boot off of that to diagnose your system.

If you have a broadband connection (Cable, DSL):
http://www.ubcd4win.com/

If you have dial-up:
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

They run basically the same software, but UBCD includes more options without
having to add many options. From these you will be able to run Check Disk,
run Virus/Spyware checkers, etc.

Download one of them, install it, and follow the Getting Started/How to
Build sections on the site(s).

The short answer is no it can't. The long answer is some folks have claimed
they can do it. I have not seen a reliable source in here with specifics on
how they did it.
