booting up

when i boot up and go into my computer it searches for
the drives which can take upto 2-3 mins any ideas its a
new ish pc 3.06ghz pent 4 512mb
 
I just about posted the same thing. The problem is occuring when he
accesses My Computer (not when he boots up) ;)

What you might have going on here is a networked drive that it is trying
to connect to or something like that that is taking a while to time out.
Do you have any network drives set that you are connecting to? Right
click on My Computer and try Map Network Drives if you have network
drives set and you may be able to remove them ;)

Check your BIOS settings in the Auto Detect IDE devices area. It may be 'controlable' in your BIOS such that you set and then forget. Other BIOS will always 'auto detect'.

This is generally a quick process unless there is a problem with the device settings [master / slave] or the IDE interface cable isn't of the corrrect type for the Hard Drive.
