In Windows XP Pro, can you boot to an external drive, say a external drive
used for backups?

Thanks

Assume you mean boot from vice boot to - only if BIOS has a setting for
alternate boot device. Power must be applied to boot device at initial
"power on" - power to external devices usually applied after boot.

XP doesn't control the booting of a PC, the BIOS does, if your BIOS supports
booting from external devices, then you can.

Even though the computer can be configured through its bios to
boot from an external USB device, Windows XP will not load up
and start whilst on an external (or removable) drive. This topic
has been covered ad nauseum

Correct, but the OP didn't mention anything about booting XP from the
external drive, just booting from the drive itself, could be planning on
using DOS for all we know.
