booting from cd

Why is the repair option not available when i boot to the xp pro cd? Its not
there. And i have done one before so i know how to do it.

So, are you saying that pressing R starts the repair install regardless of
whether or not it appears as a menu option?

If the installation is sufficiently damaged it might not be recognized and
so won't give the repair option. Also are you sure you have used repair
with this CD? Not all installation CD's have the repair option. Retail and
generic OEM CDs do but some branded OEM XP installation CDs don't.

In my experience, this has happened to me a couple of times, the prior
instances are recognized and listed, for example when you highlight the
system partition and choose to install there it warns that the existing
Windows folder will be deleted. So you're right, there is *some* components
missing or damaged that prompts the Repair option to be omitted, if they
could be manually restored such as via the Repair Console it would be a
great help. I am thinking the root file-set, ntdlr, boot.ini, ntdetect.com.
