In booting from a CD is it possible to Flash a Bios?......I have an Asus
board and want to update the bios but I dont use a floppy anymore so could I
just make a bootable CD and then add the AFLASH.EXE and the BIOS .ROM file
to the CD........Just wandering ?....I think this would work....any
suggestions...

Intel and ASUS, in fact all mobo and BIOS manufacturers now
have BIOS upgrade programs that run from Windows. These are
preferred over the old BIOS flash from a boot floppy.

But if you made a CD with DOS and the new BIOS flash
program, it should work.

If it doesn't work, you might need a new mobo. I suggest
you check with the mobo maker for their recommended
procedure.

Hi, JGM.

This is not a Windows question at all. Microsoft writes Windows. Microsoft
does not write the BIOS. The motherboard maker (ASUS in your case) gets the
BIOS for its board from Award or Phoenix or some other BIOS vendor and
installs an EEPROM with that BIOS code into the mobo. To update the BIOS,
we have to get a file containing the new binary code from the mobo or BIOS
maker and "flash" that new code into the EEPROM, using a special program
that the maker also provides.

Until recently, the only way to flash the new code was by booting from a
floppy, making sure that nothing but the most basic version of DOS (with no
drivers for CDs or anything else) was running the special flash program.
But my new (last July) EPoX 8KDA3+ mobo came with a program called Magic
BIOS. Now, for the first time, I can download and flash a new BIOS from
inside Windows. In fact, I did that again just a couple of hours ago.
Maybe ASUS offers such a utility. (Is that what AFLASH.EXE does?)

The proper place to ask this question is on the ASUS website, not on any
Microsoft page. Or ask other ASUS users in the Usenet newsgroup
alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.asus.

I also know that several GigaByte motherboard will allow you to update the
BIOS directly, without booting DOS or Windows. They have a BIOS POST
screen option which allows you to update the BIOS.

The key is to check the mobo maker's website for the latest
procedure for your mobo.
