John

I am installing Norton Antivirus Software after having
been hit by the recent worm. The software would not
completely download. When I ran the software I am
stopped at a screen that tells me I have a possible Klez
virus and that I must boot my computer in the safe mode
to install the fix. I have searched the help files and
cannot find an appropriate way of booting in the safe
mode. I am told to go to start, click shut down, then
click shut down. My version of Windows XP only allows
for stand by, turn off, or restart, therefore I cannot
get the files to download to fix the problem. Can anyone
tell me how to perform this task in Windows XP.

Thanks

For most PCs, all you have to do in Windows XP is hold down the F8 key
during a boot or re-boot. Then select "Safe Mode" from the menu that
appears. To do a re-boot, just click on START / TURN OFF COMPUTER / RESTART.

Hi, John.

Somewhere along the way (SP1?), the label changed from Shut Down to Turn Off
Computer - but it still does the same thing and still uses U for the hot
key. As Papa said, it's a little quicker to use Restart, rather than Turn
Off, if you want to reboot immediately. Press F8 just as Windows starts to
load to get a menu from which you can select Safe Mode.
