Hi - I'm having a problem starting up my PC, i'm running XP Home and it
was working ok but now i get a problem when it fires up the screen
shows an error message :

.. . . Windows did not start successfully . . . it then gives the
option to start in the following modes:
Safe Mode
Safe mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command prompt
Last known Good Configuration
Start Windows normally

None of these options does anything other than loop around to the start
again and goes through the same routine.

My son was on it last and says he hasn't downloaded anything but he did
power off at the button.

Can anyone advise on what might have gone wrong and how it might be
fixed without having to reload XP.

An abrupt Power off, likely leaves the drive in a corrupted state.
Symptoms vary, but an inability to boot means that some part of
XP is corrupted. It could be part of the Registry or a system file
that is damaged. Booting to the XP CD and using the Recovery
Console you can run a Disk check (Chkdsk) command to see if
the drive is marked "Dirty" (Means it has issues). To repair any
faults, requires running Chkdsk with a /P qualifier to fix errors.
However, while a Chkdsk may fix/allow XP to boot it may result
in data loss.

Is there a "Enable VGA Mode" option in F8 menu?

Try that

It will not go into Safe Mode with command prompt?

Boot from the installation CD, take the first R for recovery and enter
the recovery console. If XP Pro type in the password that was assigned
to the built in administrator account. If XP Home assume the password
is blank and tab over.

At the console line type in:
chkdsk /p
hit enter

Let it run, the reboot.

I don't know exactly as it was done for me but he told me it was ramme
with files like Ads, spyware, etc. and this was preventing it booting.

He cleaned up the drive and it has run ok since, he didn't indicat
that he had to reinstall anything but it came back with all the inf
intact. I don't know how he got beyond the initial boot up problem a
i'd tried all the recommended actions, he may have had a bootup CD?

He also recommended that i renewed my McAfee protection which ha
expired about two months before i got the problem and the performanc
had started to deteriorate if i think back, the day it stopped workin
the pop up warnings had seemed to be all the time. I also put some sp
ware software on.

He is on holiday until Jan 3 but i'll try and find out more detail o
the specifics that he found and how he corrected it

Hi there,

I've followed these postings because of a similar problem. I entered Chkdsk
with a /P. I wasn't clear on the results. I rebooted without XP CD. An
error messages appears saying ".....failed to start because SAMSRV.dll was
not found...." When I hit enter I get a blank screen and nothing happens.

What should I do please?
