Boot-up problem in XP

When I boot up in XP Professional, the boot takes a long time and results in a big sign "Out of Range" followed by shut down and re-boot. When it continues, the sytem gives options of "safe Mode", "Safe mode with Networking " etc, and an option "Last known good configuration." No matter which is chosen, the boot up continues by displaying a screenfull of lines all of which look like:
multi(0)disc(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\system32\drivers\*.sys
where the * stands for one of the many sys32 program on the screen.

This happened yesterday, 6/12/04, which we were on line with Eudora, a pop3 mail program, and did not downloan or open anything.

Please help, we need the computer for school program, especially this time of year.

Thank you

Did you wait long enough to allow it to boot to Safe Mode? I get the
screen full of lines when first booting
into Safe Mode and sometimes it takes a couple of minutes before XP
loads. Once there you have to
lower your Resolution and maybe Refresh rate.

Rich, I waited for a list of modes to show up and tried each mode, including safe. It resuts in the same thing that I described in the original email. I still need help to figure out why it displays "out of range" and how to remedy the situation.
