Ever since I first loaded Xp Home, when I boot up I get the logon
screen with the box which has my name but no password, as I have never
created one as I am the only user. I click on OK and the computer
completes the boot process. It's not all that important, but how to I
'remove' this interruption?

Try this first--Control Panel, User Accounts, Change the way users log on,
uncheck Fast User Switching, but leave Use Welcome Screen checked.

You will need to add a password to the account for auto logon to work.
Login to your account, go the control panel, users, and set a password for
it. Then do the following.

1. Go to Start | Run and type in: control userpasswords2 | Ok.

2. On the Users tab, clear the Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To
Use This Computer check box and then click OK.

3. In the Automatically Log On dialog box that appears, type the user name
and password for the account you want to be logged on each time you start
your computer.

You can accomplish the same thing by:

Download and install Tweakui for xp and use its auto logon feature.

Lastly you can add the Dialog box that comes up when running control
userpasswords 2 to the Control Panel with the following tweak:

Add Control User Passwords2 to the Control Panel (Line 1)

Works for me without creating a password like Rock suggested or using
Tweakui.

There is still a pause in the boot up. I want to bypass that
altogether.

1. If you have .Net 1.1 installed (probably by some third-party software
like HP printer software), go to Windows Update and get .Net 1.1
service pack and patches. This will allow you to automatically go
directly to the Desktop when you log on.

2. Otherwise, see:
