My PC will only boot in safe mode! I have re-loaded XP Home several times
and tried the recovery console, but to no avail!!!

In normal mode the system only boots to the first Window XP screen, about
10secs worth!

What are my options (sensible answers only please).

- Boot in Safe Mode
- Run msconfig.exe
- Click the Startup tab
- Disable each and every startup task
- Reboot in Normal mode

Could be that XP does not want to be in bed wish an old ISA sound or
other card.

Once in safe mode, go to run and enter MSCONFIG. Click on the boot.ini tab
and make sure safemode is not checked, or unhide files and click on the
boot.ini file, the boot should look something like this:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect

If it says safeboot in replace of the fast detect replace it.

try F8 Safe Mode, "Enable VGA Mode".
might be video driver/resolution.

reset resolution once in Windows!!

I'm with Dixonian. If booting in Safe Mode/VGA does not help, I'd try
again after disconnecting every non-essential (i.e. excluding mouse and
keyboard) piece of hardware. Also, your BIOS may have some options for
enabling/disabling some on-board hardware, and it may be useful to
fiddle with these.
