Boot-time CHKDSK not running

On a system recently upgaded from 98SE to XP Pro SP1 with
the one and only HD converted to NTFS, I found that a
scheduled CHKDSK will not run, complaining that it cannot
gain exclusive access to the volume. A similar message
appears when trying a boot defrag with Diskeeper 8, which
will also not work.

I managed to clear the dirty bit again by booting and
CHKDSK'ing from a floppy (NTFSCHK), which did run okay
and did not report any errors. However, regular boot
time CHKDSK and DK8 boot defrag will still not run.
Physically disconnecting the system from the network did
not help either.

The KB does not seem to habe any information for XP, only
a few entries for NT and SMS.

I assume that some service loads at an early boot stage,
but have no idea which one that might be. I have set up
quite a few XP systems and that's the first time I had
this problem. Can someone point me into the right
direction ?

TIA
