I seem to have lost the windows xp boot screen, which no longer appears at
start up. I should be grateful for any advice as to how I can retrieve it.

AA

Perhaps I should have included the text of the boot.ini file:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

Hi,

Nothing wrong with boot.ini, what boot screen is missing and where does the
boot stop? How about in Safe mode?

Morning. first post.
xp sp2 installed. Reboot fails. Welcom screen only without any user logon field. cycles to shut down. Tried all F8 safe modes. Prompt mode simply feeds a view of system files and drives; but I see no way to do anything at that step; box tries to boot, Welcome blue with no logon, cycles to shut down. No safe mode> Tried L for last profile; Profile 1 and the L gave no change to above story. I waited a year to let the automatic updaate to Service Pack 2 take place. And then the action kills a good day ....feels like part of me died or was kidnapped. Wish there were a way to get back to pre-Service Pack 2 without losing the files I composed. Ouch. I have looked at fatal errors for the system shut-down; notes all direct me to the F8 Safe Mode items which never open to any saafe mode past the welcome screen.. Thanks for any help. joefaust333 AT gmail.co (e-mail address removed)

Do you mean the Boot Menu?

Example of a Boot Menu:

Please select the operating system to start:

Microsoft Windows Home Edition
Microsoft Windows 2000

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.
Press ENTER to choose.

For troubleshooting and advanced startup options for Windows, press F8.
---------

Windows does not display the Boot Menu normally unless a key is pressed
during bootup (F8). The Boot Menu allows you to selectively boot Windows in
different modes. Including Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode
with Command Prompt, Enable VGA Mode, Last Known Good Configuration,
Directory Service Restore Mode, Debugging Mode, Enable Boot Logging, Start
Windows Normally, Reboot and Return to OS Choices Menu. And if a multiboot
setup, the Boot Menu lists a choice of Operating Systems that you can
bootup.

If there is only one value in the [Operating Systems] section in the
Boot.ini file, the Boot Menu is not displayed. Windows starts immediately
because there is no choice to be made.

If you need the Boot Menu to be displayed, edit the Boot.ini file and create
a second entry in the [Operating Systems] section. You can copy the
existing entry in that section. After you add a second entry, the Boot Menu
is displayed and the Timeout value is used.

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

Boot Menu Is Not Displayed and Timeout Value Is Not Used

Looks normal to me. I had the same problem after installing some
updates, I turned the boot screen off and have the old style 2000 boot
screen, and it works fine for me now.

That looks correct. If it ended with /noguiboot then you would need to
uncheck it via msconfig/boot.ini.
When did you notice this first changed? And are you speaking of the Welcome
Screen/or old W2K style or ?
