boot problems

My wife's computer running XP Pro has developed a problem
with the hard drive which is not allowing it to boot. I
tried doing a repair on the drive but, still can't get it
to boot. I know the drive isn't completely dead, as I can
hook it up as a slave on another system and view most of
the contents, but, no boot. I even tried to image it over
to another drive, but, the imaging process reports 0MB on
this drive.
Problem is, there are numerous documents that I need to
retrieve off of this drive before it actually dies. But,
since I'm not actually logging into Windows, it won't
allow access to her documents.
Is there any way for the system to allow me to retrieve
these files? Logging in is not a problem if I can find a
way to do it.
Thanks for the help.

When you hooked it up as slave on another system and viewed most of the
contents did you have access to the files?
If yes, that would be the way to go. If not try the freezer method.
Sometime if you get it real cold it will allow access to
your needed files long enough to retrieve them. But then maybe not.

When I hooked it up a slave, it wouldn't allow access to
those documents due to the fact that I'd not logged into
Windows on that particular drive.
