I installed a 160 Mb Western D. hard drive the other day. I tried
putting Win XP on it but it wouldn't take for some reason so I gave up
and decided to use it for a data disk and use the one I had been
booting from for Windows XP.

I was left with a boot.ini file that looked like this:

[boot loader]
timeout=3
default=signature(6ad8b0fb)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
signature(6ad8b0fb)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft
Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect

That left me with 3 seconds to decide which of two identical choices I
wanted. One resulted in windows loading from my old drive. The other
ended with a dark screen.

I went to System Config. Util. and clicked on a button that detected a
line in the boot file that was unnecessary so I clicked a button to
delete the line.

Now I'm left with this:

[boot loader]
timeout=3
default=signature(6ad8b0fb)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect

Which gives me two choices again, but this time it's for XP or
Windows. XP loads windows from my old drive (which I now want) and
the Windows choice leads again to the dark screen.

All I want it NO choices. How do I change the boot.ini file to
accomplish this???

Blacksmith,

you have to adapt the default line also, but the simplest way is
to do it through the graphical user interface.

Right-click on My Computer, select Properties, click on the
Advanced tab, the third settings button, then select your
default operating system, of which there is really only one.

"adapt" the default line?
How do you adapt the line? Does that mean delete it?
Sorry, but I'm not familiar with the term.

Thanks, but what can I do about it? Delete the line that starts with
"default"? Do I need to write "default" in front of the other line?

Multi (0) is your first drive that the os is looking for (1) is the second.
