Did it ever work?

Did you look in the BIOS menu to ensure that BIOS is set to boot from
the hard disk?

It also could be that BIOS has been configured to boot from CD first, if
there is a bootable CD in the drive. Ensure the CD drive is empty as a
first step to test this hypothesis. If this the cause, then change the
BIOS setting.

BIOS is accessible when you turn on the computer and startup screen will
tell you what key to press. Often it's the ESC, F8, or DEL key ... read
the screen. It flashes by during startup.

.
When you turn your pc on, press "del" to go into the
setup mode. Go to "Advanced BIOS Features" and, from
memory, set your "First boot device" to the HDD not the CD-
ROM

Hope this helps!

Rob I have tried everything in the BIOS.
This main drive was formatted and XP installed, and cannot find anything in
XP or the XP Format to set the C: drive as Active partition.

If I set it to boot from the C: drive it comes up that it cannot find a
bootable drive.

I have XP all installed and more than half setup and as you can understand
certainly do not want to have to reformat the drive. I do have partitions
on the same hard drive if I need to format and make active bootable drive or
a second hard drive to make bootable.

Sorry, but I'm having a hard time understanding what you are saying...

"cannot find a bootable drive" is a symptom of no boot record in C:

It is currently a mystery why this wasn't installed if you did a normal
setup from the XP installation programs.

There is probably a way to restore the boot record ... but I can't
remember how. Perhaps others will respond here.

Rob I formatted the C: drive to install Windows XP - no problem with format.
Re-booted after format, C: drive would not boot because of no system.
Looked on the XP minimal boot and then HELP and there was no SYS to transfer
the system onto the C: drive. There were no options with the Format under
Format /? to transfer the system to the disk.
There is no FDISK utility on XP that I can find to set the active bootable
partition.

Consequently I had to boot from the CD Rom. No problems at all, just
changed the BIOS to boot from the CD Rom. Booted perfectly and installed
XP.

Now I cannot find a way to make the C: drive bootable. The HELP did not
assist me in my quest to find a solution to my problem.

English is not my native language so sir it is not always so easy for you to
understand my messages.
Thank you for trying to assist in my search to fix my issue.

When you format partition with any XP format utility (for ex. from
Recovery console, from Disk Management), this utility write a new
bootsector and a code of XP bootmanager into it. If you accidentally
deleted this code, you can restore it using fixboot command from
Recovery console, or with 3rd party utilities like Bootpart
http://www.winimage.com.

It's true. It's possible only from Disk Management, when you already run
your system ;-). Fortunately there is many other free utility like very
good Ranish Partition Manager or MBRWork

I think, you have had made your partition active already. If so, now use
a fixboot command. If it not help you, check the disk number in the BPB
region of it's bootsector, this should be 80, not 81 or 82. You can
check and modify it with freeware uility MBRWork. Also BootItNG can help
you - check it's explanation of "Use HD0 in BPB" option,
