Rob I formatted the C: drive to install Windows XP - no problem with
format. Re-booted after format, C: drive would not boot because of no
system. Looked on the XP minimal boot and then HELP and there was no
SYS to transfer the system onto the C: drive. There were no options
with the Format under Format /? to transfer the system to the disk.
When you format partition with any XP format utility (for ex. from
Recovery console, from Disk Management), this utility write a new
bootsector and a code of XP bootmanager into it. If you accidentally
deleted this code, you can restore it using fixboot command from
Recovery console, or with 3rd party utilities like Bootpart
http://www.winimage.com.
There is no FDISK utility on XP that I can find to set the active
bootable partition.
It's true. It's possible only from Disk Management, when you already run
your system ;-). Fortunately there is many other free utility like very
good Ranish Partition Manager or MBRWork
http://www.terabyteunlimited.com.
Consequently I had to boot from the CD Rom. No problems at all, just
changed the BIOS to boot from the CD Rom. Booted perfectly and
installed XP.
Now I cannot find a way to make the C: drive bootable. The HELP did
not assist me in my quest to find a solution to my problem.
I think, you have had made your partition active already. If so, now use
a fixboot command. If it not help you, check the disk number in the BPB
region of it's bootsector, this should be 80, not 81 or 82. You can
check and modify it with freeware uility MBRWork. Also BootItNG can help
you - check it's explanation of "Use HD0 in BPB" option,
http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/kb.html.
English is not my native language so sir it is not always so easy for
you to understand my messages.
/Me too ;-)
Thank you for trying to assist in my search to fix my issue.
