Hi Guys
Can someone tell me where windows 2000 stores its boot files?
I know windows xp is C:. But in win 2000 i don't see any boot files like in
XP. (boot , ntdetect , ntdl)
The reason i am asking is i installed 2000 after xp and can't get xp to boot
now unless i use a boot disk.
Maybe someone can help me out here.
Thanks

2000 can boot with XP boot files, but not the opposite.

If you installed 2000 after XP, re-run XP setup, select the repair option
and do a boot repair. Both OS should work fine after.

They are there, you have to show hidden and system files.

Your 2K install overwrote the XP boot files with 2K versions, that's why
it is recommended to install 2K first, then XP. XP is aware of previous
OSes, 2K is not aware of XP in this regard.

You'll need to run FIXBOOT from XP Recovery Console and/or copy the XP
version of the boot files (ntldr, ntdetect.exe) to C:\.

Read here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q315233

(It's talking about dual boot with XP and NT4 but it still applies)

Good luck and please post back with your results.

They are there, in the same place.By default Windows turns off viewing
hidden and system files. Turn it on at Tools | Folder Options, View tab.

Bullshit. XP might certainly be aware of other previous OSes, but when it
comes to a non-MickeyMouse OS, it makes certain to overwrite the MBR and
destroy access to them. This has obviously been done on purpose by
MickeyMouse to make it harder for users to use anything but their
over-priced, under-functional OS.

The document states:

"Even though a workaround for this issue is described
in this article, you can only perform a dual Startup when
you install Windows XP in a different partition after you
install Windows 2000."

Why can't you install WinXP and Win2K in the same
partition - but in different folders - as you can with two
installations of WinXP, and still dual-boot between the
two using the WinXP's boot files?

Hi Guys
thanks for all the info. Nothing i tried helped.
i got the dual boot option and it would boot to win 2000, but when i told it
to boot to xp i woul get a blue screen and have to hit reset button.
I was lucky i made a copy of xp 3 boot files before i installed 2000, so i
booted to 2000 and deleted the boot files there and pasted back the original
file and now boots to xp and don't know 2000 is there. I just installed 2000
again because some of my kids have it,and i try to help them out now and
then, but this time it backfired on me.
I will just delete the partition.I don't really need it.
Thanks anyway.

You just need to add a line to the XP boot.ini file to boot to 2000.
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional"
/fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Windows 2000 Professional"
/fastdetect

You don't mention if you have 2000 or another drive or another partition.
If 2000 is on another drive

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows 2000 Professional"
/fastdetect

I was talking about the OP's situation, obviously. Your comments,
although technically accurate, do not apply to this context.

Oh forgive me! Imagine even wanting to be technically accurate when
discussing IT issues. I must have forgotten. This is a MickeyMouse
newsgroup where technical accuracy is near the end of the agenda.

Why can't the "Program Files" folder and other folders
at the C: root be shared by the two OSes? The Desktop,
User accounts, email folders, etc., may depend on the OS
that is booted, but so what? The PC will still work. If one
OS is eliminated, the C: root folders will still exist for the
other OS. This problem is presented here from time to
time - somone accidentally installs two copies of an OS in
the same partition under different folder names, and he
wants to get rid of one to recover the disk space, NOT
because there's a dysfunction.

And which version of WordPad will you have in \Program Files\Windows
