Just installed recommended updates (security and others). On restarting, get the normal Windows XP splash screen and the welcome screen. After "welcome" disappears, solid blue screen, no task bar, no icons, no nothing. Anybody have a similar experience? How did you fix it? Help, please!!!

Thanks for your attention and help and have a great day!

Can you boot to safemode? If so then I would start removing the updates one
at a time form add remove programs and reboot after each removale till you
find the culprit.

Cannot even get into safemode. Do not have a startup disk (is there any way of making one?). I'd hate to have to reinstall XP (only have an upgrade from W98).

Thats probably part of your problem. I know upgrading from previous versions
is tempting especially when the cost is considered but Win Xp and other OS
like clean full installs. Not upgrades.

Can you boot into safe mode? Hold down F8 key when booting to get menu for
safe mode.. then go to control panel add/remove programs.. then uninstall
updates.. You could also try a system restore point set dated prior to
installing these updates. Good luck.
