Hello,

Could someone please please help? After installing XP
SP2, my DELL 500m laptop boot up with blue screen that
WINSRV is missing. My problem is that I forgot my
Administrator password. I have not used that one for a
year and had tried so many times. The machines rebooted
every 3 times entering wrong password.

Please help! I need the machine and all data in there. It
has only 1 partition.

Thanks much in advance.

I installed a parallel copy of Windows and found out that
WINSRV.DLL does exist in the %SYSTEM32% directory.
Loading the old hive doesn't report any problem. Does
anyone know root of this problem? I really need to get my
old Windows XP home back. Truly appreciate any help.
Thanks.

Hi

I had the same problem with a Dell Dimension desktop. I
managed to get around it by creating a slipstream version
of XP and SP2 and creating a new bootable CD. Then I did
a "Repair" of the exisiting XP installtion by booting
from the new CD and and going thru the setup process
until I got to the "Repair exisiting XP..." and
pressing "R". Amazingly it worked!!! And I didn't loose
anything - or at least I haven't noticed anything yet.

Thank you Sam,

I figured since I forgot my Admin password, I installed a
new WinXP on the same drive, different directory. I then
move the SAM files to C: drive, and boot onto Recovery
mode using WinXP CD again. This time around, Recovery
doesn't ask for password and I can just uninstall SP2,
boot up onto the second WinXP, move the SAM files back,
restart to older WinXP and it works.

This sounds like very common bug of SP2. Wish it'll be
fixed soon.

Hello,
Can you send me the svcpack.log file from the failed install?
Remove the online from the email.
Thanks,

hi again Finger Dance

I should have mentioned the "Repair" option did not ask
for the admin password. It did a clean-cut job of
an "install" but it was not an initial install and
remembered all the settings. It did ask for the Product
Code but that's fair enough.

Pleased to hear you sorted it out - all the best from the
UK.

Darrell,

Please see my reply to Finger Dance. It is interesting
that a repair using an integrated XP + SP2 installation
CD sorts the problem... from my research it appears the
original problem seems more prevalent on Dells - but is
not only on Dells.

All the best

Sam,

did you try a repair installation without SP2 slipstreamed, i.e.
a repair installation with the original Windows XP install CD? I
thought that would do as well, and then you could reinstall SP2
later. Not so?

Hi guys, i am a newbie to this and I tried to install SP2 last night and
received this screen as well. My question is how do I boot my computer from
the DVD/CD drive to get the "Repair" part on the XP installation CD? I tried
to list the drive in my bios to start first, but it is not working. Any
newbie help is appreciated, I just dont want to lose all my files. Thanks

Hello Sam,
Actually that is not surprising at all. The issue is the correct version
of a file did not get copied over during the XPSP2 installation. Now there
is a file mismatch. The issue is why did the file copy not take place
during the installation of the service pack. This could be due to a file
in use which should have worked on the reboot unless something else caused
this to fail. Getting the log files from failed machines may help
understand why this is happening. XPSP2 also does a version check, so if
newer versions of installed files are in place they may not get replaced.
This should work with newer versions of the files. again the log file may
help us with this. There could also be a permissions problem with the
registry or on the drives, but the log file may help with that.
When you do a repair with XPSP2 slipstreamed in, the process is different.
You are now running setup, rather than installing a service pack.
Setup always replaces files, it doesn't do a version check so all files are
replaced even newer ones. Since you are not inside the old OS, you are
booting from the cd and doing the repair, there are no files in use that
would affect the files that could not be properly copied over. So while
that is an issue with the service pack install that will not affect a an
installation which is what a repair is.
