Hi All

I have been running XP Home SP1 for a year, and had not had to do a
reinstall for nearly 2 months! A great achievment methinks.

But of course all good things come to an end, and so it is with me now.

Up until 2 days ago, when I installed Vegas 5 and some MS Network thingy
that Vegas said I had to have, when XP started up it just did - no
asking for passwords or such, hit the on button and away it would go.
When I shut down, a box appeared with three choices in a horizontal line
- shut down, restart, and cancel.

Now, when I start up it asks me for a password every time - this is by
way of a window that shows my user name, a place to enter a password,
and a row of buttons - OK - cancel - Shutdown - Options (plus of course
the top part of that Window says log onto Windows, and has the logos etc
on a blue background. Since I don;t have a password I just hit enter
and then Windows starts up.

When I Shut down now, instead of that Window with the three choices, I
get a Window asking me what I want to do, and with a drop down menu with
options to Restart, Shutdown, log off, and standby to choose from.

IN user accounts there is only me, and a provision for a guest.

I tried everything I could think of to get the computer back to how it
was but no joy. Tried system restore, NBG (it never works for me) and
reloading XP - but it is still the same. Naturally I removed vegas and
that Network thingy

Please help - do I have to do ANOTHER full reinstall and then reload all
my apps again? I get SO sick of doing this over and over - what a
bastard of an OS this Windows is.

David - spoilt by using Macs for so long.

While you were in 'user accounts', did you open 'change the way users log on
or off'? You can make changes to suit your fancy there. Also, from the run
command type "control userpasswords2" without the quotes and click ok. On
the screen that comes up, unchecked any selection that requires a password
to log on. Question.....why are you having to reinstall XP so often?

HTH,
