Hello,

I would be really grateful if someone could help me. I run windows xp home
edition. Just lately, I have been having real problems with my internet
browser and configurations changing by themselves (no I dont have a ghost!).
Now, on top of everything I have started to get 'lines' moving down the
screen? Any suggestions as to how I can get rid of them or is this a warning
sign that my computer (dear old faithful) is finally on its way out?

Thanks for your help, Luci

If you have browser settings changing by themselves, your PC might be
infected with spyware. The page below details several fine products that can
assist you. I personally use Ad-Aware (free) and SpySweeper (free trial
available). Regarding the lines on your screen, this could be the monitor or
the video card either going out, or an unsecured connection on a cable. If
you plug the monitor into a different PC and there are no lines, then it's
your video card or video drivers, most likely.

The first problem is likely malware. You need check the condition of the
system with your av software, spy bot, and adaware (at least).

The second problem is hardware related. The monitor is the most likely
source.

Rightclick your desktop.
Properties.
Settings.
Advanced settings ("Geavanceerd" in my mother tongue. I'm sorry but
sometimes I translate this mother tongue of mine literally in
Shakespeare's tongue.).
Screen.
Frequency.
What does it say ?
What is the largest setting on your Windows-system in Hertz ?

Often due to bad monitor or bad video card.

One possibility not yet suggested for the lines on the monitor is
electromagnetic interference directly affecting the tube - I assume here we
are talking a conventional monitor and not a flat screen.

Have you moved another monitor or TV close to it, do you have a desk lamp
near it with a compact fluorescent bulb in it? Some monitors are much more
sensitive to such things than others. Also make sure the cable is securely
attached to the computer. I've seen a fluorescent light on the ceiling do
similar although this would be very unlikely. It's a nice easy thing to
check though

Otherwise my guess would be the monitor failing although video cards can go
bad and drivers can do this if they get damaged.

If you have other software related things going on, and it sounds as if you
do , then there could very well be a driver problem . Sorry this is a bit
vague but there really are lots of possibilities .
