Bloody _underscore/line problems

Word problem: you type an underscore (a _ ) and then press the space
bar or Enter and it becomes a line right across the page. This is
sometimes useful but, when it's not, I find I can't get rid of the
bloody line!
Does anyone know how I can get rid of it?
I looked in Autocorrect and Options to see whether there was any hint
of a setting I could turn off, but could find nothing like that.
Help gratefully received.

That's very odd - you should have to press the underscore three times to
initiate the border command. I see that Stephen has pointed you to the
directions to removing the line.

Please confirm that you are pressing the underscore only once?

If the OP *is* pressing the underscore only once, then I suppose "_"
must be defined as a formatted AutoCorrect entry (which includes a
border).
