Thanks for your speedy reply. can I manually and
selectively block any port without using a firewall?

I believe that port 135 is Netbios. If you are not and
have no intention of using file and printer sharing with
other computers in a network, turning off the netbios
(AKA netbeui) and file and printer sharing should shut
down this port.

The other approach is get a firewall that blocks access
to the port. The included XP internet connection
firewall should do that. You can download the free Zone
Alarm (www.zonelabs.com) firewall or if you are using
broadband, you can buy a router with a firewall. The
nice thing about the router w/firewall is that it allows
you to safely allow file and printer sharing on your
local network without exposing it to the internet. Most
of these routers can also route a specific port to a a
specific computer if it is running a server you want
exposed to the internet.
The website www.grc.com has excellent information on how
to disable ports and why (especially port 135) and can
test your computer to see that they are really invisible
(shields up test).

It does not shut down the port - merely that use of it. You need a
firewall to do the job - the inbuilt one is enough
