Blocking Messages in O.E.

I am plagued with e-mail messages offering me mortgages. When I add the
domain name to the Blocked Sender's List, it only stays there as long as I
leave O.E open. If I close it and open it again later, the domain name has
disappeared from the Blocked Sender's List. Is this normal? Surely the the
domain name should remain there until I remove it. Any advice?

Hi Allen,

See if this helps:

1) Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT

2) Go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook
Express\5.0\Block Senders

Where the {8A067580........} number is the GUID for the identity that you're
using (it will be different on your machine).

3) Right click on the Block Senders subkey and select Export. In the Save
As dialog, give the file a name and save it to the same folder the
restore_blcksend.vbs file is in. You're exporting this branch as a backup.

4) Expand the Block Senders branch and right click on the Mail subkey and
select Export. In the Save As dialog, give the file MAIL.REG as the name
and save it to the same folder the restore_blcksend.vbs file is in. In the
Save as type: pull down, select 9x/NT4, or the script won't work.

5) Right click on the News subkey and select Export. In the Save As dialog,
give the file NEWS.REG as the name and save it to the same folder the
restore_blcksend.vbs file is in. In the Save as type: pull down, select
9x/NT4, or the script won't work.

6) Double click the restore_blcksend.vbs file.

7) The script will prompt you when finished.

Note: In the event that the script cannot find MAIL.REG or NEWS.REG it will
error out. Both MAIL.REG and NEWS.REG must be present. Additionally, if
you neglect to choose 9x/NT4 as the type of REG file, it will error out.

Close OE. Start>Run>Regedit> find and delete this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
\Identities
\{GUID}
\Software
\Microsoft
\Outlook Express
\5.0
\Block Senders

(where GUID = long number corresponding to your Identity)

You will have to rebuild your Block Senders list afterwards but it should
work now.

This assumes you're losing Block Senders list for both Mail and News. If
not, expand above key and delete only the one giving your problems

Thanks to both you and Kelly. However, when I get down to \Outlook Express\
5.0\, 'Block Senders' is nowhere to be seen. The entries below it are:

Mail
Mail Note
News
Recent Stationery List
Signatures, and below that
Trident.

But no Block Senders. Perhaps that's why it won't work?

Is MS Office and/or Outlook installed, Allen? If the latter, is MS Outlook
your default Mail Client? Are you opening a separate instance of OE to
access newsgroups?

I use Outlook Express. As I say, when I opened the REGEDIT file, there was
no sign of BLOCKSenders at the end of the list. There is in my laptop,
however, and it seesm to be blocking the pop-up that's plaguing me. Do I
need to totally remove O.E. and re-install it, and if so, how? I have tried
removing it using "Add or Remove Programs" in Control Panel, then
re-installing it, but I suppose it just loads what was there before. Any
more advice???

Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default one
named 'Main Identity'. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named
Identity (File>Identities>Add new identity). (Do not rename 'Main Identity,
replace it.) Assuming all is well, import messages from the old Identity
before deleting it (File>Identities>Manage Identities).

Sorry to be so awfully dumb, but I now realise I was looking in the wrong
REGEDIT file. Yes, the "Block Senders" file is under the HKEY_CURRENT_USER
heading. But when you say ....."find and delete this key", which key do you
mean I should delete? The HKEY-CURRENT-USER which will take out everything
below it, or just the BLOCK SENDERS?

I have two {GUID} files by the way. Should I deal with both of them? I'm
pretty much out of my depth when I get into this sort of stuff, but this
constant barrage of spam from this one sender is getting me down.

Thanks for your patience,

Allen Hull

Each {GUID} represents an OE Identity. You should be doing this only in the
Identity's {GUID} in which you're having the problem.

See http://www.insideoe.com/files/store.htm#storemain and OE
Tools>Options>Maintenance>Store Folder.
Thanks for your patience,

No problem!

You might want to consider filtering /in/ your messages, though:

Eureaka! It worked. The domain names are now in place in Blocking Senders,
and remain there after I turn the PC off and then re-start. No one has tried
to sell me a re-financing package for over an hour! Peace at last. Many
thanks indeed.
