Hi,

I have Outlook 2003, and somebody sent me an exe file as an attachment
to a mail. The message is from a trusted source, I was expecting it, and
I want to save it to my hard drive.
Outlook tells me that the attachment has been blocked because it may be
unsafe. Looking at the help, it tells me these settings can't be
changed.

But can they?

I do not appreciate Microsoft telling me what I can and can't save to my
hard drive. Blocking these attachments by default is a good idea, but to
prevent those options from being changed is complete madness! MS are
just trying to cover their own backs in case they get sued for a virus
attack by someone who is stupid enough to run an unknown executable on
their system and try to make out that MS should have stopped them doing
it!

Is there a way of unblocking these files?
Any way at all will do, or should I just abandon Outlook and find an
email client that will do the job without treating me like a imbecile?

See http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/esecup/getexe.htm to learn how to get
the attachments off. One popular method is Attachment Options from
www.slovaktech.com

For more information on the security features, see

If you use OE, hit Forward on a message and open or save the attachment,
then close the message. Or disable it using tools | options | security.

I had the same problem. I downloaded DetachOL form the link below and
it fixed all my problems. You can choose different levels of
security, reset to default values if you with, and you don't have to
mess with the registery. Hope this helps
