Blank screen at start up

Please help. I am running a sony vaio notebook with xp home. The only way I can shut down is to press and hold the power button, When I re-start I get a blank screen, several attempts with the same result. Then I wait an hour and the computer starts normally. I re-formatted the hard drive thinkinking this was a software or virus issue and tried to shut down and re-boot BEFORE installing any files or aftermarket software and am still having the same malfunction. I have had this notebook for a year and a half and never had this problem before. I also removed the disc drive, battery and hard drive then put it all back in and this didn't help either. Any ideas, I am becoming frustrated.
 
Overheating? Can you open up to clean out any "dust bunnies' which may be
blocking the vent areas, or around "Innerds" I would try that.
