Blank "Document 1" won't go away- W2003

I'm using Word 2003, replacing my old W97. The program opens on a blank
"Document 1". When I open the document I want to work on, Document 1
remains. It's not the world's biggest problem, as I can close the unwanted
blank document, but I don't think it's supposed to stay there.
The blank document closes without asking if I want to save changes.

I am using Norton Antivirus 2002, Adobe Acrobat 6 and Endnote 7 with Word.
They were all installed before I installed Word 2003 (the installation
process said it had removed my old W97).

Any thoughts?

If you haven't already, turn off the Office Plug-In in Norton AV. I don't
think it has anything to do with this problem but it causes plenty of
problems on its own.

I have the same thing happen in mine. Based on what others have posted here,
I suspect my problem is due to Add-In programs that I load upon starting
Word. While they don't "dirty" the Document1, they seem to confuse Word
enough that it stays open when I open or create another document. As you
said, its minimally annoying.

You can check if you have a similar situation by using Start => Run
Winword.exe /a

to load Word. When I do that and open an existing document, Document1
disappears.

I keep Document1 open all day on purpose (by typing a single space into it),
but even though I always Undo back to zero at the end of the day,
occasionally I'll be asked to save changes. I expect this if I've
protected/unprotected (so I usually open a new document to experiment with
forms) or checked the file Properties (though I don't know why I would do
that in an empty, unsaved document), but with nothing in the Undo list, it's
always a mystery, comparable to the mystery of why Word will prompt to save
Normal.dot repeatedly for several days until I give up and give in, then not
bother me for months. <g>
