Its true -I have been wrong before, and I have made wrong
accusations, and I do rant. But all clues for my cd-rw
problem and likely the latest epidemic of cd-rw, cd-rom,
dvd/cd errors now point to latest imapi.exe, imapi.sys
files from xpsp2 upgrade. Its so simple now -if all the cd-
rw symptoms are associated with the imapi program, and all
the drivers and hardware check out with third party
software, it looks pretty bad for impapi. The symptoms you
say?? try
1) freezing on please insert a cd-rw click next stage; 2)
automatically shutting itself down for no apparent reason
3) disappearing reminder ballons
4) changing registry drive info to wrong info

Oh yea, apparently impapi pedigree is the software sewer --
patchs, patchs, patches

of there are those of you with working imapi under sp2 --
just wait a while.

Comments?????

Ok,maybe it isn't imapi (or impapi, for that matter).
Some progress on the huge problem of cd-rw/dvd drives etc
that are turned in to cd-rom ("please insert a cd-rw" hang
symptom) imapi blame idea. I think this is causing probs
for many.
After uninstalling the cd-rw, disconnecting, removing
drivers, removing all nero software with their special
remover program,re-booting etc, I think I convinced xpsp2
that I no longer had a cd drive. Then I shut -down, re-
installed cd-rw, re-booted, and guess what happens?
The xpsp2 auto driver update icon shows up in the corner
for a few seconds. Then after right clicking on the cd-rw
drive icon, what shows? NO RECORD TAB!!!!! What does that
mean? It means xpsp2 doesn't recognize the drive as a cd-
rw from the very start. Imapi hasn't even been run yet.
Aparently imapi can't be easily tricked into using a drive
that xpsp2 thinks is something different.
The big question is why does xpsp2 os suddenly stop
recognizing cd-rw/dvd's etc. It should be one of the
easier things for the operating system to do. After all,
it has no problem loading the right cd-rw drivers,
recognizing the right model, firmware etc. Only possible
explanation now that I can think is that the registry is
changed somewhere other than the Drives 3>2 guid place.
Can someone at msft please write a new patch for xpsp2
that will fix the registry cd-rw recognition
routine????????
