Black Screen with cursor in top left corner

After installing Service Pack 4 my computer will not shut
down properly. It goes to a black screen with the cursor
in the top left corner. The Knowledge Base mentions
Windows Media Player which I uninstalled and Adaptec CD-R
which I do not have.

Any suggestions?
