Black Screen at start up

Hi

Recently I was using my computer and had finished so I shut it down
properly. However, the next time I loaded it up it the screen saying it had
not shut down properly was dispolayed and I was aksed to load it in safe
mode, safe mode with networking, etc. No matter which option I choose the
computer gets as far as the Windows XP Home loading sign (or the screen
displaying a large amount of white writing in the case of safe mode) and then
hangs, either on a black screen or on the screen with the white writing.
Nothing happens for ages, so eventually I have to turn my computer off.

I have not installed any new hardware of software, but have played around
with a few settings using Tweak XP Pro.

Does anyone know what I can do to solve this?

Thank you very much

Try starting in VGA mode! Tap F8 a few times immediately when Windows begins
to boot. You will be presented with a choice menu!
