Black screen after initial power up

My mum went to turn on the laptop yesterday and when she did, it turned on
fine. After the initial, very first page of text (when it powers up) it goes
black. Theres nothing there, no mouse or anything, and the lights aren't on,
yet the screen is still on but there's power going to it. The normal screen
doesn't come up, the one with 'windows xp' and the little loading bar
underneath... its not there!

Can anyone help?!

Contact the laptop mftr.'s tech support. It sounds like a hardware
failure.
