I am not exactly a computer person, I can just handle the basics. I just
installed XP on my Sony Vaio and now there is black border that is a couple
inches thick all the way around Windows. It is making my screen about 5 x 7
inches. It is very annoying. Could someone please tell me how to fix it? I
would greatly appreciate it. Besides that problem, everything else works
good.
Thanks in advance!

Visit Sony Support and download and install the latest
video adapter drivers designed for Windows XP and your
specific Sony computer model:
http://esupport.sony.com/

After installing a fresh set of drivers, right-click on your
desktop and select Properties > Settings, change the Color
Quality to "Highest (32 bit), then adjust your Screen Resolution
to your liking, then click on Apply.

First: Have you tried the monitor adjustments?
Every monitor has built in controls (most often accessed with buttons on the
front of the monitor) to adjust the width, height, position, etc. Try
these first. Then post back if you still have trouble.

Do you have an LCD display? If so, this panel has one and only one native
screen resolution, and all other resolutions is handled in one of two ways:
1) Resized to fit, causing image distortion, or 2) centered on the screen
with black borders, like you describe.

Try to right click your desktop, select 'Properties' on the popup menu and
press the 'Settings' tab in the window showing up. You will se an area for
'Screen resolution' with a slider and your resolution, possible showing as
'800 by 600 pixels' or something. Try to drag the slider a notch to the
right, and then press the 'Apply' button at the bottom right. Does black
borders shrink or disappear? If so, keep dragging right and applying until
your borders are gone.

Alternatively, there may be a way to convince your display to resize the
display. This option may or may not be available to you, and even if it does
I strongly suggest following the steps in the previous paragraph first. As
for how to resize the display you must consult your monitors manual, or just
browse through the on screen menus and see if you find it yourself.
