BK Replacem is an advanced program with more capabilities than
LightningSearch, however, to carry out a search and replace command
from scratch, you have to put in about two to three times as many steps.
Have you tried this one:

SC-Search-and-Replace will quickly replace text in all your documents
within seconds. SC-Search-and-Replace supports previewing,
case-sensitivity and various search options. This program is fast and
easy to use, making it one of the most powerful search-and-replace
utilities available. In addition to replacement of text within files,
SC-Search-and-Replace supports changing text within filenames too. With
SC-Search-and-Replace it's possible to rename multiple files on your
hard disk within seconds.

SC-Search-and-Replace takes only 32 KB of hard disk space and works on
Windows 98/ME/NT/2K/XP/2K3.

both have their pros and cons, I like and use both. LightningSearch
more often, it allows multiline replace the simple way. ReplaceEm
on the other hand allows to define more instances of replacement
for a file set to apply in one step, save this definitions for
reuse and offers stuff like regular expressions.

To be honest, most times I use search and replace within NoteTab
editor (also with linebreak matcher or regular expressions).

Unlike BK Replacem and LightningSearch, you cannot search and replace
multiple lines. For example, you could type the following into the
GUI:

search:

This brwn dog
the fent

replace:

This brown dog
was jumping through
the fence

I find it important, not because I am too lazy to replace one line at a
time, but that I look for certain lines so that I can place another
line above or below it.

I downloaded the .exe file, clicked on it, got an error msg and that
was it. I am still searching......;-)

Q.

The author hasn't tried LightningSearch on Windows XP. He said he was
going to look into it.

BK is more flexible, but for simple searches of my PC, nothing beats
Agent Ransack

I see that it has the feature of killing the intermediate step of
searching for the same text within a file. In big files, I hate having
to:

1) search for the file(s) which contain certain text
2) open the file and search for the text that is supposedly in it

Can you edit the text as well as view it?
Does Agent Ransack also do multi-line search and replace?

I got a new beta from the author, Oleg Rekutin. It has been updated to
work with Windows XP. Certain situations caused crashes (even though
LS finished the job before crashing). The author had not touched
LightningSearch since late 90's. He had no idea people were using it.
Anyway, here it is:

http://home.earthlink.net/~storageplace/LightningSearchUpdWithTrace.zip

Please test it to see if it works fine, so he can release a new
version. This testing version creates a trace log at the root of the
drive called lsearch.log. If you have any problems, please mail this
log to:
