My computer is an Asus Z84J. When I go into BIOS I find the startup items are
enclosed in parenthesis [ ]. There is an explanation that reads: A device
enclosed in parenthesis has been disabled in the corresponding type menu.

Does this mean that a new choice of a a starting mode can not be made? If
so, what needs to be done so a valid chice may be made?

Go to the "corresponding" menu and open it. It means, some other menu
disabled it so you can not set it.
