Hi all...not sure where to post this as it isn't
technically an XP problem. Basically on start-up when I
have tried to access the "Bios" menue (hitting delet on
start up screen)...enter password comes up. I have no idea
what the pass word is. There is no documentation
concerning this with the PC. Have looked at the
motherboard manufacturer's site AMI (american mega trends)
which list several passwords...but no luck with these
either. Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.....thanks...Mark

Most mother boards have a clear password jumper on them. Or just pull the
battery for about 5 seconds. This will clear your password and set you bios
settings to default, so you will have to reset any special settings you had.
Did you try a password of just enter key.

Thanks for the reply Nick...I tried the suggested
passwords, but no luck. The "clear password" jumper? How
would I find that on the mother board. I'm a little
reluctant to pull the battery just in case I have "other"
than default settings in place. (I haven't altered any
settings since purchase but if the vendor has...I wouldn't
know what to reset ! )...thanks...Mark

The password will almost certainly NOT clear in 5 seconds
by pulling the battery (try 15-20 minutes). Can you say
CAPACITOR ? And there's no "clear password" jumper.
There is a CLEAR CMOS jumper on most motherboards . . .

I have never had to pull a battery out more than the time it takes to pull
out and put back in. You are right in that it is called clear cmos jumper
that will clear the password and settings like I said. How long does it take
the jumper to clear the cmos...? Uh only a split second taking the cap to
ground. If the cap was large enough to hold a charge for 15 to 20 min uh
what would a short to ground do....? Uh can you say POP and Blow. Go
discharge a one farad backup cap to ground..

MJS, if you look on your mother board around the battery with a magnifying
glass you will see the jumper or you mb manual will show you where it is.
Did you try just hit the enter key when it wants a password...?

Thanks for all your help guys...and I tried enter without
a password...I tried almost everything, bar submerging the
keyboard in water (lol)...I think the jumper lead will be
my first line of attack...again thanks for your help
here...cheers...Mark

If you have an AWARD bios....
Try AWARD_PW, AWARD_SW or AWARD_WG on us keyboard layout.
