BIOS won't recognise CD ROM drive

When I start up the computer, the CD rom drive is not listed. I have to boot to the BIOS setup and choose "DEFAULT" settings and then the computer recognizes the CD drive. My local geru says it might be the IDE controller on either the motherboard or the CD drive, but did not have any way to tell me how to test for these problems.
Any suggestions out there?
Help!

John;
What happens if you swap the IDE connections of the hard drive and
CD-ROM?

Don't know. This does not happen frequently. I downloaded a flash update for the BIOS on advice from Sony Tech. Then it happens (losing the drive) more frequently. Before the flash, I only lost the CD drive one time about every two months. The box is still under warranty and I really don't want to take it apart yet. I have another "Vaio" and had to have a new motherboard installed in the first month. Their (Sony's) first question was "have you opened the case?" So I'm really just looking for ideas.
Thanks.
