Can anyone recommend any good safe password cracking software? I really
don't want to take the laptop apart if I don't have to.

Thanks!

You would likely be time ahead contacting Gateway. Reality check time!
If the PC can't get past the BIOS password, password cracking software
isn't going to be much good.

I have not verified this myself , but have seen it mentioned a few times

Give this a try if you are wanting to clear cmos. Boot with a boot disk.
Once you get to c:> do the following:

At a command prompt ( i.e. C:\> ) type DEBUG and press the [enter]

key.

There will be a " - " on the line below. type the following:

O 70 2E [enter]

O 71 FF [enter]

Q [enter]

You are now back to a command prompt. Reboot the computer and

you will see a message stating that the

CMOS Checksum is invalid and you will be prompted to enter CMOS

and correct the settings.

This should prove to be useful as you should not have to remove

the case of any computer to clear CMOS.

Hope this helps...

Most BIOS passwords I've seen stop all activity before even the POST is
done.
If so, it ain't gonna boot from a floppy is it!

possibly.

Can you get into your bios?

If you can, with Ctrl Shift Esc,
Del

or whatever,

get into your bios.

If you can't get into your bios, then try to get to the
motherboard, and reset the cmos chip. There should be a
jumper on 1-2 or 2-3 (I think the default is usually 1-2)
reverse what it's set for. Count 10 seconds, and put it back
the way it was. That should completely clear the bios.

At the very worst, least, take it to a computer repair
store. They should be able to do it for you in a couple of
minutes.

Good luck!

There is simply no other way. You have to open your laptop and remove
the small battery that is used to backup the computer's cmos. It takes
a second to reset the cmos but you should be prepared to open the laptop
to reach the battery!! Sometimes it is very hard!!!

How do you ascertain from the OP that it's a Gateway? I don't see ANY
mention of laptop type in the OP!

heres a thought ...

Unlike desktop computers, most laptops store the BIOS password in a chip
that can not be erased simply by resetting the CMOS battery. Dell laptops
have a "master password" unique to each machine that you can use if your
forget your BIOS password. You must contact Dell via the telephone and after
a complete verification of your ownership of the computer, they will provide
you with the necessary password.

I want to thank everyone for their input. Yes, it is a gateway. After
talking to them (even though my support had run out), they couldn't seem to
get me the service manual which was all I was really needing at that point.
After googling, I found quite a few sites that had the manual I need. For a
price! I finally found a site that had it for free and I know it's the right
one because I had someone here who used it before verify it. So, that's how
I'm spending my weekend since I've never taken apart a laptop before. Wish
me luck.

What I still want to know though is how it came about that I needed the bios
password in the first place. I barely know how to get into bios much less
what to do once I get there. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.
At least this whole thing is a great learning experience.

You are correct, the password usually gets stored in some form of non
volatile memory.
i.e. It doesn't loose data when power is lost.
Thats why removing the CMOS battery doesn't help.

If the manufacturer can't help you, look here and see how a Dell laptop with
the same problem gets fixed.
All done with a paperclip!

With some Gateway notebooks the only way to reset the password is to return
it to the factory. Removing the battery for the CMOS will not reset the
password. Before taking apart your notebook confirm with Gateway how to
reset the password.
