Hi, I've just been informed by Packard bell that there is a newer bios
firmware than the one I have installed (newer by a couple of months). My Q
is, is it necessary to have the newest if no problems are evident? Any
thoughts ?
PS Sorry if this is the wrong newsgroup.
TIA
J.J.

Read the associated Readme or other Change log file. It should clearly
list fixes/enhancements in the newest revision. As a general rule, flashing
BIOS is only required when a specific issue the PC exhibits is fixed.
Additionally, some BIOS Flashes are required to allow users to update
their CPUs to newer versions/steps.
BIOS Flashing is now done from within Windows and is relatively safer
than years ago. However - if it fails, you can be left with a unbootable PC.

Absolutely not. It's neither nessary nor advisable to upgrade it. Although a
BIOS upgrade normally goes well, it is not without danger. If something goes
wrong while the upgrade is an progress (for example, a lapse in power) you
can be left with no BIOS at all, and an unbootable computer.

Do a BIOS upgrade if you need to--because you are having a problem that the
new version is known to fix--not just because one is available.
