Hello all,
I have an IBM T42 with XP install with the lates service packs and latest
updates.

i went to update to the latest BIOS in the IBM Support website. I did
everything in the directions. The process began and the message read that it
should be done within one minute"don't reboot while this process is running"
it said something like that.
well 2hrs passed and it was still running so i went to reboot hoping i could
start the update again. Nothing happends. I press the Power button and it
seems everything turns on, hard drive, fan, lights etc. but no display comes
up.

Please help.

Contact IBM. It's fried.

Yeah i did, they'll send me a Depot box to be shipped back, i just thought
maybe someone had a solution before i send it in.

thanks, Shenan

BTW - I am not trying to be facetious.

If the firmware update started but did not complete for whatever reason -
that can be disastrous. Your computer depends heavily on that BIOS to
direct it on what it has and what to do with what it has. You may not have
done anything wrong - but I know of no way to recover easily from a dead
firmware writing.. If you were doing it from a floppy/CD boot and it will
still boot from one of those - you MIGHT be able to write to the BIOS
properly now. But if you cannot boot in any fashion, you will have to
contact IBM and see what they recommend.

ONE THING YOU COULD TRY IS TO is to remove the system 3v battery for 30
mins.
This may reset BIOS to default and enable you to boot.

Ok thanks,

I'm going to remove the battery for 30min or more and hopefully this will
reboot it or fix it..
I'll let you guys know of what happends.

Merry X-mas

I have never seen that to help when one experiences a corrupt bios flash.

You're right it won't fix a corrupt bios flash.

However, resetting the configuration data is a good idea. Removing the
battery forces this to happen.

Now you understand why so many of us tell folks never to flash their
BIOS unless doing so will add something or fix something that is
critical to their needs. Just doing it because it is newer is
certainly unecessary and potentially disastrous - as you have
discovered!

However, this has nothing to do with WinXP and as such, you are asking
this question in the wrong place. Better to ask in a hardware group.

No, it won't work. Gel, you're mixing up the user-configurable BIOS settings
in CMOS with the BIOS code itself. Removing the battery resets the former,
but does nothing to the latter.
