I upgraded to XP from 98 ME hoping that would fix some
problems. I'm missing restore. Disk defrag won't work.
Have no windows explorer. Any suggestions?

Darren;
Generally it is a good idea to solve problems before an upgrade.
You should not use the upgrade process to attempt resolution of prior
issues..

Check for missing/damaged system files:
Start/Run
Type "sfc /scannow" ENTER
Follow the prompts and have the Windows XP CD available.

When you upgrade, the Windows setup program saves a file called upgrade.htm.
I can't remember if it saves it to the desktop or the c:\windows directory,
but it contains any issues that could not be resolved during the upgrade
process. You should read this file and see if there are pending issues that
need to be addressed for the system to operate properly.

Also, you should check your Device Manager and make sure there are no driver
or other issues there that need addressing. Right-click on My Computer and
select Properties. Click on the Hardware and Device Manager. Review the
devices listed and notice any items that may have an error symbol in front
of it. You can double-click on an errored item and it will indicate whether
the drivers need to be installed or what the problem may be.

If you need to obtain updated drivers, you should go to the manufacturer's
website for that particular device and download the latest drivers. Do not
install your Win ME drivers as they will not work.

Good Luck

Always clean install a new OS! - never ever upgrade especially when u have
problems with the current OS.
