After applying the latest/greatest updates and patches for
Win2000 Pro, my system is slowly falling appart. It seems
that every day, links get broken, .dll files are lost,
printing problems develop, applications don't work
correctly. I few weeks ago, I know the computer picked up
a virus (VBS.dull) through an email attachment. The virus
got through during a three day period I was having
problems with Outlook Express, after the last Win2000 Pro
& OE upgrades and patches were applied.

During the troubleshooting process, I was told to turn off
my firewall (Zone Alarm Pro) and Norton Anti-Virus (part
of SystemWorks 2003 Pro) email checking. When the email
problem was resolved, I received a flood of 175+ emails
that came in unscanned. I can only assume the virus was
in one of those email. I tried replacing the
deleted .dll's, icons and links, but didn't get all
corrected. I've since, completed numerous full system
anti-virus checks with Norton AV (all current AV
definition updated), as well as using the Symantec and
McAfee free online AV checks. I've also completed several
system checks with Anti-Trojan 5.5, and Pest Patrol. The
checks come up with no virus' or trojans being found. The
way it's acting though, I still believe there's a
suspicious cause somewhere.

I'd like to know the best way to repair my OS (or maybe do
a parallel OS install) without loosing everything. I do
have the Win98 Second Edition OS installed on D: drive,
that I can boot into. It doesn't seem to have any
problems. I have no idea how I should go about trying to
get things straightened out. Any help would be GREATLY
appreciated. I would appreciate it if anyone who offers
help, would send a copy of their post to me directly at
(e-mail address removed).

Thanks,
Don

Here's what I'd do:

Do a careful virus scan, there are several online sites that will do
that for you. Run Spybot S&D, if you don't have it, do a web search
and download it. If you can't find any virus or worm proceed to the
next step:

Plan on losing everything. Figure out what data files you need to save
and move them to a different partition (Drive D should work). If you
haven't enough room, use Partition Commander or Partition Magic to
resize partitions.

Now boot on the Windows 2000 CD, tell it to delete "C", reinstall
Windows 2000 and good luck!

As always, YMMV.

If you are wanting to retain the settings and are willing to perform some
form of re-install, then you can perform an "in-place" upgrade:

Hi disaken,

First off, virii, worms, back orifice, trojan horses, and others like IRC, IM, etc. attacks are in a different class from people think they are. When you get an antivirus to inoculate one of the scobbies, it's not like getting an injection at the doctor. Much, much worse. Ours bodies help us to cure maladies after a period of time. Whereas on computers, we don't get any help. In fact, if we don't do exactly what we are given to get rid of the blasted thing, it comes right back and may make other parts stop working. Damn, why do they have to do this. Don't they know who they are dealing with? Let me cut to the chase.

Where did you get the information with reference to your virus being formally named VBS.dll . I don't really know very much about the particular IRC type virus, but I suggest you run a virus scan from SYMANTEC online at http://www.symantec.com/nav/nav_9xnt/ . It's under security check. After running this, You need to go to Google, type in the exact virus name and find SYMANTEC fix page, print it, do exactly what it says in the order it says to do it, or get ready to do a Clean Install, that ain't no fun, if you're not used to doing it.

I'm sure you're having enough misery, without someone who you don't know adding fuel to you apprehension. Just try to do everything SYMANTEC says to do, and if it doesn't work, you have a back up of your data already, just get the instructions for a Clean Install, and blow it off.

Good Luck,
don

Problem is that if his odd failures are caused by a virus an "in-place"
upgrade will leave the virus/worm/whatever intact.
