Big performance problems

Hi,

I'd be very grateful for any help whatsoever on this!

My laptop is performing really slowly, and I don't know
why. I've turned all the display settings to the lowest
(maximise performance)in XP, but it doesn't seem to help a
lot.

Also, it has a 800Mhz processor, but in the System option
on Control Panel, it states 496Mhz. Any ideas why it's
doing this? A hardware fault?

Also, the system intermittently complains of a lack of
Virtual Memory. Any way that I can increase this?

Cheers

As for the virtual memory: start--control panel--
performance and maintenance, click the system icon--click
advance tab--under performance click settings--click the
advance tab on that--under virtual memory click change--
check circle next to system managed size, after you
highlighted the drive at top,if you have more than one,do
them all like this--click OK-- OK--OK--Click restart for
changes to take effect button. I've heard of people buy a
computer from Best Buy(my brother was one),and someone
did the ol switcharoo-put a .8 MHTZ and 128MB RAM in for
a 1.3 Gig,and 256MB RAM The nice employee's switch the
computers in the same size box, their friend gets the good
one you get the lesser,if you don't know too much about
computers you get burnt. You have a 500 MHZ probably a
Celeron, sometimes when you reboot it'll show as 500,thats
what you have.If it's newer you may want to take it
backand complain,if they don't fix it for you call your
states atterney general and file a complaint -

.

Just a thought? My sister-in-laws laptop did exactly
this and it turned out to be a Sassa-D virus.

Assuming you have a mobile processor, it will slow down
when on battery. I think mine even slows down when
plugged in and not being used.

They do this to save power (battery life), and reduce
heat.
