I received a CD in the mail today (Saturday, 9.04) of SP2, I had ordered
it last week.

IT WAS NOT THE FINAL VERSION, IT WAS THE "RC2" VERSION. There was no
mistake about it, it was silk-screened as the RC2 version, and it was
the RC2 version.

But why would MS be sending these out to people who ordered the final
version subsequent to it's release?

Screw-up, I'd presume.

The one I got this morning said "Release Candidate 2" right on the CD.
It wasn't subtle. I also have the "real" SP2 CD that I got a couple of
weeks ago, and it just said "Service Pack 2". I've verified that the
labels (silk-screening) of the CDs was correct by comparing the files to
downloaded files.

What I can't figure out is why MS would be sending out RC2 CDs almost 3
weeks after the final version -- which is different -- was released.

That is strange, because Microsoft never makes a mistake.

Did you order SP2 RC2 on CD at one point?
Contact Microsoft and let them know that the CD is for RC2 - I'm sure
they'll send you a new one.

Sounds like a mix up at the CD manufacturer?

You did better than I did. Although I got the RIGHT CD, it was totally
crushed!! And it was in a cardboard mailer AND a padded envelope.
Someone had a BIG burr up their butt to get THAT PO'D!! But, MS AND the
shipper both know about the situation. ;-Deano

Yes. Here was the sequence of events:

Order SP2 RC2 (on the last day that the web site was up for that purpose)

Received SP2 final released "gold" version

Ordered a 2nd copy of SP2 CD ("gold" version)

Received SP2 RC2 pre-release version.

?????

The 1st CD was received before the 2nd CD was ordered. Both CDs were
received very quickly after ordering (within about 5 days).
