Big delay/slowdown when receiving mail

Hi,

Whenever Outlook retrieves mail, my whole computer slows down. Especially
when starting the computer up, and there are a lot of mails to be retrieved,
the system becomes unusable for up to 10 minutes.
Any explanations, ideas?

I'm using Outlook 2002, on an XP Pro (patched to SP1), Pentium 4, 1024MB Ram
machine.
