Dark Horse

I've spent a year or so slaving away at a rather difficult spreadsheet with
complicated formula's, and was feeling rather proud of myself when I managed
to complete what I set out to do just before the end of the year.
Then I thought I'd turn my attention to making a record of all my bets,
thinking that compared to what I did last year this would be easy!
You do sometimes get that sinking feeling when you are completely wrong
don't you? And then I wondered if anyone on here has done something similar
already and would be willing to share the spreadsheet?
All I want is to be able to record all my bets with dates, names and bet
details - and have the total added/deducted from a starting bank.
If the sheet can also work out the bet - then so much the better and that
would be great, but it isn't that important.
I started okay, but I can't find a way to record a price as 4/6 (so that I
can understand it, rather than as 0.667 which I'll be scratching my head
over) and have that recognised by a calculation.
The UK must be alone in some of the fractional prices that we use, and they
make life difficult.
I know I'll never be able to record the calculations for every bet, but I
only use just a few basic bets anyway.
What I don't begin to understand is how to make the sheet realise that my
bet includes the next two horses listed, or the next 3, or 4.
Is that possible?
Thanks

Have you tried Format / Cells / Number / Fraction

If you tell us how the bets work then we can probably help you will formulas,
but I don't know how the bets work so am struggling there I'm afraid.

If I use fractions in a formula I tend to get the results as fractions.
I want the information input to be displayed as a fraction (8/15 for
instance) but the output result as £1.53.
Then I need some way of letting the spreadsheet know which lines to include
and for which type of bet. I.E. Double, Trixie, Patent, Yankee etc.

The formatting is the easy one. You just need to format each cell separately,
so format the ones you need to be fractional as fractions, and then format the
rest as numers with decimals (or vice versa).

As for the betting, imagine you are explaining the betting system to a six year
old, including what cells you want to be included, and what you want done with
the data in the cells. So far you have said you want some way of letting the
spreadsheet know which lines to include, which does me as much good as me
telling you to simply click on them. :-) I have no idea whatsoever what a
Double / or a Trixie or a Yankee are. Roulette however - that's a different
story (Not that I can help you win, but at least I know what the bets are) :-)

A single is just that, $1 to win on 1 selection ($1 win a 2/1 returns $3
with your stake included.) . A double is two horses AB where the stake is
multiplied by the prices of the two selections ($1 @ 2/1 and 3/1 will return
$12 with your stake included). A treble is likewise, ABC, but with three
selections ($1 @ 2/1, 3/1 and 2/1 will return $36). A trixie is three
doubles and a treble on three selections, AB, AC, BC, ABC. ( 4 bets giving a
return of $69 using the same three starting prices as previously) A Patent
is three singles, three doubles and a treble (7 bets giving a return of $79
using the same three starting prices). A Yankee is four selection in 6
doubles 4 trebles and an accumulator AB, AC, AD, BC, BD, CD, ABC, ABD, ACD,
BCD, ABCD (11 bets giving a return of $296.13 when adding a 15/8 winner to
the three previous starting prices).
Those will be the only bet calculations needed, as they are all I ever make.
The horses names will be recorded vertically down a column, or horizontally
across a row if that would prove easier?
I will have a starting bank carried forward at the opening of the sheet, and
this will be added to or deducted from depending on the result of the bets
laid.

Here in UK we have unusual prices returned that were once related to pounds
and guineas that would be difficult to record as decimals from memory -
11/8. 13/8, 15/8, 20/21, 85/40, 4/6, 4/7, 4/9, 4/11, 2/7, 2/9 etc.
Any easier to understand?
