Any recommendations for a well-organised site for downloading drivers
(including ancient ones) without the nuisances that accompany some of them?

From the manufacturer.

For others, Google for drivers.

I picked up some obnoxious add-ware while browsing the "all drivers"
sites I found in gooogle from an unpatched freshly installed 98
system, using IE. Nothing that S&D couldn't cure, but it was amazing
how fast my browser sucked up sh*t. I know it was some driver site
because all I did was look for dirvers for the crap old trident card
in the machine in order to run the installation procedure on Microsoft
Patched CD I just got. It requires more than 640x800 16 color
graphics.

Why a patch installation tool needs pretty graphics is beyond me.

Conclusion: Patch First, Browse second.

Thanks - diverguide is the best of the ones I've used so far, but I'm glad
of the endorsement!

Thanks! I'd used driverguide.com, but the other was new to me.

Is there a way of salvaging drivers from a machine you plan to reinstall?
