Best way to upgr. motherboard

I heard that windows doesn't like it when you uprade your
motherboard and re-attach your hard drive since it wont
necessarily recognize the new chipset, motherboard
drivers, etc. Can you just install the motherboard drivers
after it boots up for the first time or is this a bad
thing to do? Is there a less painful way to upgrade short
of formatting and reinstalling everything? Thanks for your
help.
