Best way to do sidebars?

What is the best way to do a sidebar, or otherwise have a chunk of text
be seperate from the rest of my document and have other text flow around
it? I'm guessing Insert -> Text Box, but I'm wondering if there's a way
to do this across several pages, for example, to have one entire column
devoted to sidebar material (as seen in many college textbooks)
throughout a multi-page section.
 
For that you'd need linked text boxes.
