I Have adjusted the settings to best performance, everything has speeded up
nicelly,
but i am left with horrible blue boxes under my desktop icons, can i get rid
of them ?.

Go to Control Panel => System => Advanced => Performance

Put a check mark on "Use drop shadows for Icon Labels on Desktop
It's the second one from the bottom...

[From a post by MVP Malke]

Four things are required for transparent icon backgrounds:

1) System Properties>Advanced>Performance Settings>Visual Effects -
check
“use drop shadows for icon labelsâ€.

2) Right-click on Desktop>Arrange Icons by>Lock web items must be cleared.

3) If you have any web content on your desktop, transparency won’t work.
To check for web content: Display Properties>Desktop>Customize Desktop>Web -
make sure all check boxes are clear.

4) Wallpaper must be an image file, not html.
