I have used Spamfighter but after the trial periode has expired, it
isn't that effective anymoe, plus it leaves a message in all emails
about using it and it has sofar stopped xxx numbers of spammail.
So I'm sure there must be a freeware spamfighter out there that will
be just as effective (or better) and would like some suggestions
please.

Try this:

K9

Overview:

K9 is an email filtering application that works in conjunction with
your regular POP3 email program and automatically classifies incoming
emails as spam (junk email) or non-spam without the need for
maintaining dozens of rules or constant updates to be downloaded. It
uses intelligent statistical analysis that can result in extremely high
accuracy over time. K9 learns from its mistakes and becomes better and
better at being able to identify spam. More importantly it learns to
recognize what you consider to be spam. K9 is for standard POP3 email
accounts only. It does not directly support Hotmail, AOL or any other
kind of webmail type systems, nor does it support SSL or secure
authentication as used by MSN.

Been using K9 for a long time. It simply works and gets all my spam
(high 99% of it),

I loaded K9 the other day. It needs programming to look at my email but I
haven't figured out what it requires yet. I was an extensive programmer in
VB-DOS so I'm not a complete newbie. So far, their help file hasn't made it
clear. They need to put out a one paragraph step by step or better, why
could it not be automated like spamfighter was?

I tried Mailwasher with the same results.

Spamfighter started giving me errors on sending in OE and on the advice of
others, I dumped it and those problems went away.

BTW a repeat of why I got into this spam mess and what to NOT do. [g]
When I went from dsl to rr, I went for several months with NO spam. All the
sudden, they have found me and I'll get 6 or 8 in a row, many from the same
sender but with a different "free" article.

How I think I got into this mess. I got a email from (I thought) HP
printers and I responded to it because by coincidence, I had been conversing
with HP about my printer software. It was for a free HP printer. Silly me,
I
answered the inquirer's first page of 2 questions. Then the next page came
up with a lot of (nosey) questions and I thought "Oh Oh" and dumped out of
the thing without sending anything, I thought. Well something must have
gone out because the spam started that day and heavily.

Probably because Robin wrote it primarily for his own use then decided
to share the program.

You might take a look at Spamihilator which does offer a step-by-step
set of setup instructions for OE.

or SpamPal

http://www.spampal.org is the site

Set up with the following plugins:
Bayesian
Bad Words (but only for a couple of words)
HTML Modify (cleans out webbugs, deals with some viruses, etc...)
MX Lookup (checks that the from address is genuine)
RegEx filter (uses regular expressions to sort spam - there are
filter lists available)
URL body (checks URLs in messages against DSNBLs)

Both programs are *very* good. But of course YMMV and personal tastes
rules.

K9 has a wizard during installation and a section in the Configuration
page where it will find your e-mail settings and set it up properly.
What sort of error message are you getting?

Actually I was getting no errors. Nor was I getting anything else. I had 8
spams in a row come in and it didn't even look at them. I'm sure it is my
fault but I just deleted it and downloaded Spamihilator. I'll give that a
try for a while.

After using several different spamfighters, I like PopFile the best.
It's Bayesian, free of course, has a nice interface, and is very
flexible. It does take a while to train, however.

I use it with Thunderbird, and it catches things that TBird does not.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will take a look at both K9 and
Spamhilator. Is there any idea in running both programs or will they
conflict, and if not, will it be more efficient to just "train" one of
them up to catch the spam?

I find Spanhilator *really* works.

I don't think it is a good idea to have both. There will be learning
conflicts between the two and you will use many resources, but you can
try if you like.

I have used K9 for over two years and the current accuracy is 99.82%
which is lower than it used to be since I am reclassifying certain Spam
as Good mail for Ebay reasons. I receive about 125 Spam a day and none
make it into the Inbox except for the ones that I reclassify as Good.

Well, if you didn't train it then you are probably correct. K9 is an
excellent program once it is properly trained.

Regards, John.

Greetings.

I use Thunderbird. I just created a rule that everything that is not
on my address book to be marked as junk, read and placed in the trash
folder of the corresponding account.

So far everything is going smoothly.
