What do you guys think is the best software firewall out there? I am used
Kerio 4.0 but I think it's too aggressive; for example, I have problems
updating windows unless I turn off the darn firewall.

Thanks for any input,

Zone Alarm. You don't need to by the Pro version you can just use the free
version. It has always served me well.

thw,

ICF is transparent, but not very effective.
ZoneAlarm is very good, with many extra features, but it taxes system resources.

I am using Netgear firewall (hardware) and ICF.

Hope this helps.

Try Sygate personal firewall, it's free and works good.
I was using Zone Alarm free firewall, but there is a
problem running a complete disk error check at start up
when ZA is installed. Hopefully ZA is working on a fix.

Hello, Trying Agnitum Outpost Firewall; http://www.agnitum.com, has
a free and pro (pay) version.
Have tried several free firewalls they all seem to have good and bad.
Using this one for the last week so far seems to be a good product.
take care.

The one supplied with XP works just fine for me.

Well, WinXP's built-in ICF is certainly better than nothing, but
it's no substitute for a real firewall.

WinXP's built-in firewall is _adequate_ at stopping incoming
attacks, and hiding your ports from probes. It doesn't give you any
alarms, or any other kind of indication, to tell you that it is
working, though. Nor is it very easily configurable. What WinXP also
does not do, is protect you from any Trojans or spyware that you (or
someone else using your computer) might download and install
inadvertently. It doesn't monitor out-going traffic at all, other
than to check for IP-spoofing, much less block (or at even ask you
about) the bad or the questionable out-going signals. It assumes that
any application you have on your hard drive is there because you want
it there, and therefore has your "permission" to access the Internet.
Further, because the ICF is a "stateful" firewall, it will also assume
that any incoming traffic that's a direct response to a Trojan's or
spyware's out-going signal is also authorized.

ZoneAlarm, Kerio, or Sygate are all much better than WinXP's
built-in firewall, and are much more easily configured, and there are
free versions of each readily available. Even the commercially
available Symantec's Norton Personal Firewall is superior by far,
although it does take a heavier toll of system performance then do
ZoneAlarm or Sygate.

I thought that you would jump in here with your MVP FUD.
I have a real firewall using an old P II boxen with floppyfw.
I have been using the net since the early 90's and have never
been hijacked, or contracted a virus. The answer to this
is _EDUCATION_ not FUD.

Greetings --

So, you're saying that you're using a real firewall, but I'm wrong
to advise others to do the same, rather than relying upon WinXP's ICF?
You're "reasoning" eludes me.

Is English your second language. I was directing my thoughts towards
education, which almost every public library and users groups offer on
a free basis. I do not consider any firewall a real firewall if it is
based on software.

Greetings --

Then that is what you should have said. Although you've admitted
to using a software firewall yourself (It doesn't matter that you're
running it on a separate PC; it's still software.), so you point
eludes me.
